Don't tell Wimpy. Be there. Pass it on. London's newest restaurant is opening with a mighty splash Wednesday offering free food for everyone in exchange for a donation to the London Food Bank. "We're asking everyone in London to come on down and try us out," said co-owner Ian Roden, who with partner and pal Kris Hunt will open the first location outside Ottawa, where there are six locations and a seventh opening soon since it first opened in 2001. "We want to raise as much money as possible for the London Food Bank." With 68 varieties of burgers, each named including several with local references, such as Mike and Al's Afternooner, named after CJBK 1290's drive-home duo and Smokin' Joe's, named after Mayor Joe Fontana there Monday to give it a taste. "A high-end place like this is exactly what is going to bring people downtown," said Fontana, who had a burger topped with chipotle ketchup, caramelized onions and havarti cheese, along with a serving of fresh-cut fries. "Yeah, I need some of that high-octane cholesterol every now and again." The new restaurant with its "casual, industrial, factory" decor, including personal items hanging on the walls from Roden's family (grandfather's curling broom, grandmother's old camera) and a few burgers named after Hunt's family members. 	Ottawa eatery, The Works, announced London expansion earlier this week Restaurant to offer 68 different kinds of burgers when it open KYLE REA, METRO NEWS - London, ON A burger with plenty of meat and even some sass, or a veggie-themed burger with tangy sauce on the side … which would you pick? It certainly wasn’t an easy choice I faced as I picked what will soon become the Metro London burger, to be featured at The Works gourmet burger bistro, 145 King St. The name chosen for the burger is true to our motto: Metro’s Burger Worth Sharing. If you enjoy plenty of meat with a little something extra thrown in with your news as much as you like it on a burger, it’s definitely one to try. Expansion co-owner Kris Hunt, born in London, said the Forest City was The Works’ first choice to expand. To celebrate its arrival, local dignitaries and media were invited to come out and name a burger. Placed in front of me were two choices — one had Gouda cheese, bacon and avocado, the other cucumber, tomato, red pepper and curry mayonnaise on the side. At first it seemed obvious that the combo of bacon, cheese and avocado would win out. But the curry mayo made the taste buds sing, which made for a tough choice. 	One of our columnist's suggestions comes with the taste of Tim Best in every bite IAN GILLESPIE, LONDON FREE PRESS - London, ON They want the mayor to name a burger. But before he does, Joe Fontana has a question. “You got a licence?” he asks. They don’t. Not yet. So the beer will have to wait. Still, Fontana soldiers on. After gamely sampling a tray of patties at The Works, a new gourmet burger bistro scheduled to open in May at 145 King St. (across from Covent Garden Market), the mayor bites into one with chipotle ketchup, carmelized onions, havarti cheese and four strips of double-smoked bacon. I politely inquire if his worship has recently had his cholesterol checked. “Who cares?” he says. Something is dripping from the mayor’s mouth. No matter. He christens his burger the “Smokin’ Joe.” Fontana has been partial to the moniker ever since an inspired copy editor used it to caption a Free Press photograph of the former MP, who’d donned boxing gloves and struck a pugilistic pose for the camera. (The caption was an obvious homage to the great boxer, “Smokin’ Joe” Frazier.) Now it’s my turn. The folks at The Works have invited a few local notables (I’m not sure how I got on the list) to name a few of their 68 hamburger variations. There are six of these restaurants in Ottawa; now co-owners Kris Hunter (born in London, but raised in Peterborough) and Ian Roden (from Ottawa) have brought “Ottawa’s best-kept secret” to the Forest City, where they’ll employ 40 workers. (They’ll be accepting job applications here April 7-9 and 14-16 from 3 to 8 p.m.) Apparently, city councillor Judy Bryant stopped by earlier and picked a burger garnished with grilled eggplant and fresh avocado. (Figures.) She called it “the urban burger.” Me? I’m taken by a burger adorned with wild mushrooms, brie cheese and crisp bacon, henceforth known as the LFPress burger. But frankly, I think they missed a few opportunities. I mean, if they want their food to have a local flavour, then they should consider these delectable choices: — The Tim Best Burger: A hefty helping of beef generously marinated with beer and vodka, which runs from the scene of the meal in delicious style. — The Downtown Burger: Wrapped in an old, left-over heritage bun, this burger looks a bit rundown and scary, but it’s actually quite safe. — The Fontana Burger: Like London’s taxes, this tasty treat is served frozen. But it’s dressed with an unpredictable smattering of baloney and spicy provolone cheese. — The Guy Lombardo Burger: Special honey sauce makes this offering sweet and vaguely familiar, but totally unrecognizable to anyone under 50 years of age. — The UWO Burger: Features our highest-priced ingredients and condiments, paid for by your parents. — The Fanshawe Burger: Lightly grilled over a pile of flaming furniture. — The JLC Burger: This mouth-watering option is half-sized, overpriced and inexplicably popular. — The Chris Bentley Burger: A safe, predictable favourite served with white bread, processed cheese and an incomprehensible legal waiver. 	BRIANNE BINELLI, FOOD SERVICE WORLD, APRIL 05, 2011 OTTAWA — A plan is in the works to bring one of Ottawa’s favourite burger joints to the rest of Ontario and, if all goes well, eventually the rest of the country. “The Works is bringing its gourmet burgers to new neighbourhoods across Ontario,” announced Andy O’Brien, president and CEO of the full-service chain that currently has six locations across Ottawa. “We’re proud to offer our fabulous guests, both new and old, the ultimate gourmet burger experience in one of our new urban factory bistros. O’Brien who, along with Bruce Miller and Sean Bell, took over the franchise from founder, Ion Aimers, last fall, haven’t changed the concept, which includes 68 varieties of chicken, turkey, veggie, beef or elk burgers in a family-oriented, industrially designed space with community spirit. “We didn’t come in here to change it, it was to bring it to more [people],” explained O’Brien during a media announcement and luncheon at Ottawa’s Westboro Neighbourhood location. “I’m the agent of non-change.” More than 200 applications have been received from potential franchisees, but the key to expansion is finding the right person to fit the concept, which has an average footprint of 2,500 square feet and requires a financial commitment of $300,000 of unencumbered capital. But, it’s about more than the money,O’Brien pointed out as media chowed down on burgers — topped with ingredients as diverse as peanut butter, Kraft dinner and sauerkraut. Instead, the management team is looking for potential candidates who fit the brand culture, have experience in the industry, know the brand’s food intimately and, finally, have the financial wherewithal. London, Ont., will mark the home of the first Works Gourmet Burger Bistro outside of Ottawa in May, with plans to open in Kingston, Ont., Guelph, Ont., Oakville, Ont., and Barrhaven, Ont., this spring and summer. “There’s lots of sites, we just have to find the right partners,” says O’Brien. Six to seven openings are planned for this year, 10 for 2012. Until then, the company is busy planning the London opening, which will include the re-naming of 11 burgers that are currently personalized to each Ottawa site.

	Helping Hand By Diodora Bucur If you are craving onion rings, now is the time to indulge. Until May 1, all proceeds from the sale of The WORKS’ signature Tower-O-Ring will go toward a number of food banks in Ottawa, including Orléans-Cumberland Community Resource Centre’s emergency food program. “We are hoping to raise $400 for each of the communities we are sponsoring,” said The WORKS president Andy O’Brien. “We have six (outlets) in Ottawa and the teams working in each restaurant have picked the organization that they wanted to be associated with. So, our Orléans crew picked the CRC.” The fundraiser was kicked off March 7 and the money raised will help support the purchase of supplies for the emergency food program. The WORKS opened its first joint in the New Edinburgh area in 2002. The Orléans outlet at 900 Watters Rd. (corner with Trim Rd.) threw open its doors in 2007 and currently employs 60 people. “Each week we tally the results and we are well underway to raising that money,” O’Brien continued. “And if there’s more, we will give more.” Thirty-one organizations and counting Cindy MacKay, fundraising and promotions coordinator with the CRC, says as many as 31 different organizations and businesses assisted the centre in 2010. On average, the CRC provides emergency food to 535 people per month with nearly half representing children. “The emergency food program relies on donations. Everything you see on the shelf, every bit of food that goes out the doors – it’s all because of our sponsors and donors, people that have been helping us for the last almost 23 years to make sure people in Orléans and Cumberland have food on their table,” said MacKay. Business success O’Brien says maintaining a strong visibility in the community is what makes any business successful. “When you support local communities, they support you. And when you support local companies, they support you as well,” he said.

	New owners see national franchises for Ottawa chain RON EADE, THE OTTAWA CITIZEN, MARCH 17, 2011 The new owners of the successful Ottawa chain of six The WORKS Gourmet Burger Bistro outlets have ambitious plans to take it national within five years and, later, global, following the sale in September by founder Ion Aimers for an undisclosed price. Turns out the little chain of Ottawa restaurants with 68 different gourmet burgers, fresh-cut fries, classic shakes and cold beer was one of 200 companies considered for purchase by Oakville-based Fresh Brands Inc. Details of expansion plans were spelled out over lunch in Westboro with Andy O’Brien, Ottawa native, president and chief executive officer of Fresh Brands. He said that he’s already fielded queries from people who want franchises from as far away as Lebanon, Russia, Mexico and the United States. And to think, it all started in 2002 with a little joint on Putman Avenue in Ottawa’s New Edinburgh neighbourhood. It was there Aimers was astonished to sell 30,000 burgers in his very first year. O’Brien and two partners have more than 50 years’ combined experience in the packaged food and Canadian hospitality business, having most recently held key management positions at family-owned Cara, the restaurant company that owns Kelsey’s, Montana Cookhouse, Harvery’s, Milestones, Swiss Chalet and Coza! Tuscan Grill. O’Brien was president for five years of Kelsey’s and Montana’s Cookhouse, while partner Bruce Miller was vice-president of finance at Montana’s, and Sean Bell was vice-president of marketing at Montana’s. “While I loved working with a family company, I wanted to go out on my own,” O’Brien said. “So I set up Fresh Brands in January 2010 and was fortunate enough to be joined by business partners who I had worked with for 10 years. “We had two criteria in searching for a company: We wanted a Canadian business and we wanted to be positioned for growth.” So far, The WORKS is Fresh Brands’ only property. “We looked at 200 businesses across Canada, from coffee chains to fine dining and everything in-between,” O’Brien says. “I’m from Ottawa and my family always raved about The WORKS for many years. So I called Ion Aimers and asked if we could have coffee. At first he said no, but when he found out I was from Ottawa we did get together in January 2010. Although he had no intention of selling, after six hours of chatting he was willing to meet again.” “We realized we shared a lot of similar philosophies, and two months later we negotiated a deal. For me it’s about people, the food and the environment. Put it together and they make the brand.” O’Brien plans to develop more brands under the Fresh Brands banner over the next 10 to 15 years, but on the immediate horizon he plans to take The WORKS nationwide. “The demand for The WORKS franchise around the world is huge, but our business plan is to build slowly — five more stores in the next year, all in Canada. We’ve had 400 requests for those five new stores, and I’m getting more every day.” The WORKS maintains its commitment to use Canadian beef. He has also recently met with Thom van Eeghen at the Elk Ranch in Ottawa (Kanata) to supply ground elk in the future — which could more than double the size of the ranch. “We expect to take them nationally with us.” Loyalty among customers, staff, and a sense of community is essential to The WORKS formula. To that end, the burger company has been known to paint the outside of its burger palaces pink in support of breast cancer research, or blue during Bluesfest, or red when the Ottawa Senators are playing. O’Brien says that commitment is also reflected in staff loyalty, as annual turnover at The WORKS is just five per cent or less compared to 50 per cent or higher in the industry. Turns out the little chain of Ottawa restaurants with 68 different gourmet burgers, fresh-cut fries, classic shakes and cold beer was one of 200 companies considered for purchase by Fresh Brands Inc. And now that the deal has gone through, the new owners have ambitious plans to take it nation-wide with five more outlets within the year, and likely global after that. 	$10,000 raised for the School Breakfast Program on behalf of The WORKS & Elk Ranch!

	The WORKS in partnership with the Elk Ranch is proud to annouce a donation in the amount of $10,000 to the School Breakfast Program. From September until mid-November, for every WORKS Gourmet Elk Burger sold $1 was put aside for the program. Cash donations were also accepted. Numerous studies have demonstrated that children who try to learn while hungry experience dizziness, low blood sugar levels, fatigue and the inability to pay attention. When a child has had an opportunity to eat a healthy breakfast they have fewer attendance and discipline problems and their ability to achieve success in school increases dramatically. A well-fed child has greater self-esteem and has the energy they need to be a full participant during the school day. This program provides students in-need with a nutritious meal to start their day. In addition, we are educating children and youth on the importance of healthy eating and promoting healthy lifestyles. As of September 2009, the School Breakfast Program has been providing a healthy start to the school day for over 11,000 students in 148 schools. This equates to 2,090,380 breakfasts this school year alone. The program benefits more individuals than those represented in these statistics. These stats only represents the number of students participating in the program and not the countless educators and other students who benefit because their students/classmates are coming to class ready to learn.
